"Cros Saint Georges" bay was formed as an haven for many galleons trapped by rough seas. A few fishermen's huts were built as shelter on the shore. Around 507 A.D., two illustrious Saxon soldiers named MANDRIANUS and FLAVIANUS were converted into Christianity by the holy man Cyprianus. They followed him to Tholo (today Toulon) and settled as hermits on "L'Isle de Sepet". From the sixth to the eleventh century A.D. Lombards and Saracens frequently raided the coast and inland areas. So, the village was looted and the inhabitants were dispersed or killed. The isthmus of "Les Sablettes" has been shaped in the middle of the seventeenth century, therefore the island of "Sepet" become a peninsula. "Le Lazaret", located the isthmus of "Les Sablettes" and the "Pointe de la Vieille" was designed for a quarantine area receiving contaminated ships (1657). In 1657, the region of La Sagne (today La Seyne) obtained his independence from the domination of his powerful neighbour "Six-Fours". Royal Saint-Louis infirmary was built in 1670. Then, in 1818, it became a Naval Hospital and finally, in 1936, one of the main French Naval School specialized in mechanical units, named GEEM. During the Second World War, coastal batteries were marked out to take a prominent part in the liberation of Toulon (1944). In 1950, the hamlet of "Creux Saint-Georges" was separated from La Seyne and became a district under the administration of a mayor, adopting the name of SAINT-MANDRIER-sur-MER. A new urban area called "Le Pin Rolland Marégau" appeared in 1960. At the beginning of this century, Saint-Mandrier was a little fishing and trading port. Today, "The delightful peninsula" has become a beautiful harbour, greeting superb ships, yachts and cruising vessels. This harbour is renowned for his picturesque beauty.
