The Blue Flag is one of the world's most recognised voluntary eco-labels, awarded to beaches that meet rigorous criteria across four categories: water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and services. A beach must earn certification every year — there is no permanent award.
Europe dominates the list, with Spain, Turkey, Greece, Portugal, and France collectively accounting for more than 850 certified beaches. But the programme has expanded steadily into the Americas, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, with new countries joining each cycle.
